In March 2012, Christine Cocquyt and Jan Rammeloo, researchers at the National Botanic Garden of Belgium, will be in Kisangani to hold courses in algology and mycology as part of VLIR-UOS.
Christine will discuss the taxonomy of algae, their relationship to fish farming, and their role as indicators of water quality. Meanwhile, Jan will give a basic course on the biology of fungi. He will also carry out surveys in the villages as a prelude to more detailed research on edible mushrooms.
These activities will contribute to setting up algology and mycology courses and creating a fungi and algae reference collection for the UNIKIS.
