On June 6-10 2014, the 1st International Conference on Biodiversity in the Congo Basin has been organized in Kisangani, DR Congo, by the University of Kisangani with its Centre de Surveillance de la Biodiversité, the Royal Museum for Central Africa, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the Botanic Garden Meise. The conference was very successful with 264 submitted abstracts, 220 participants out of 23 countries, 60 oral presentations and over a hundred posters.
The new Centre de Surveillance de la Biodiversité, constructed at the campus of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Kisangani, has been officially inaugurated on June 14 2014.
Jean de Dieu Mangambu Mokoso defended his PhD thesis on November 25, 2013 at Antwerp University.
This 1st Conference on Biodiversity in the Congo basin, 6-10 June 2014, Kisangani, DR Congo is the first opportunity for African and international scientific communities and other stakeholders to meet, exchange information, compare and jointly analyze data to facilitate the sustainable conservation of the biodiversity and the natural resources of the Congo basin.

This conference is an initiative of the Consortium Congo 2010 (the University of Kisangani, the Royal Museum for Central Africa, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the National Botanic Garden of Belgium) and the ‘Centre de Surveillance de la Biodiversité’ in Kisangani to facilitate interactions and collaborations among Congolese, Belgian and international teams and experts involved in various fields of biodiversity-related research in the Congo Basin.
